About Us
Founded in June 2004 as the OpenIB Alliance, the organization was originally focused on developing a standardized, Linux-based InfiniBand software stack. In 2005, the Alliance committed itself to supporting Windows, a move that would make the Alliance’s software stack truly cross-platform. And in 2006, the organization again expanded its charter to include support for iWARP, which is a competing transport technology to InfiniBand. Today, the vision of the OpenFabrics Alliance is to deliver a unified, cross-platform, transport-independent software stack for RDMA.
To that end, the Alliance provides tools and development resources to code, refine and publish standards-based, open-source software for RDMA. The Alliance is well on its way to creating a transport-independent software stack with the scalability and performance necessary to support mission-critical applications while eliminating interoperability barriers to RDMA adoption.
Ultimately, the Alliance hopes that its software stack will be incorporated into the Linux kernel tree as well as commercial versions of Linux, giving the OpenFabrics software a nearly ubiquitous presence in RDMA environments. Along the way, the Alliance will promote industry awareness and acceptance of RDMA fabric technologies.
